Modesty and Me

August 1994, Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil In 1994 I arrived in the tropical beach city of Fortaleza to teach short term at a school for missionary children.  I'll never forget the first Sunday I went to church with my husband.  We didn't have a car, so we chose to walk to the nearest church we knew of.  It was a walk of about 5 or 6 city blocks.  I had on white, high-heel, summer sandals, a pair of Summer L'eggs pantyhose, and my best Lanz summer dress with a pink floral design.  I was in-style, if I'd have been in American, that is!  By the time we got to the church, my feet had blisters, my legs had heat rash, and my pink floral dress was the only one like it in the church that morning.   I quickly adapted on future walks to church to flat sandals, no hose, and simpler outfits.  I learned that women didn't wear their bathing suits on buses even if they were on their way to the beach and dressing up was a fancy blouse with jeans and high h...

What a Year!

This past year was an incredible year for the Atha family. Here's a small list of this year's events that came to my mind as I gratefully considered all that the Lord God did for us in 2011... Byron and I started teaching ESL classes outside of the home. This was a mixed blessing: lots of work and not as much reward as we'd hoped. It did expand our circle of acquaintances around the town and for this I am grateful. Dona Neia moved into the head cook position for most of our camp retreats. She is a joy with whom to work. Look back to my "Happy Family" post to hear more about the others who began working in the kitchen this year. William and Byron were able to make an incredible trip together to visit the town where Byron's parents worked years ago. The spent almost two weeks in Sao Miguel do Guama along with Granny Atha in May working on the church building and parsonage there. William participated in his first missions trip. He went up to C...

Worth It

good friends great messages special music prayer time                         "I don't think it's really worth my time."  "Ah, it's going to be so hot."  "I don't have the money."  "Oh, I have so much to do."  "I can't leave my family to fend for themselves all day long."  Oh, oh, oh!  Excuses, excuses... I hear them every time I rally the ladies of our congregation to head off for an area-wide ladies' meeting.  Usually I end up going alone or with just one or two others.  Wednesday four women and two girls went along with me to the 51st Meeting of the Regular Bapitst Women of the Sao Francisco Valley.  We had a blast!  More than 160 ladies were present for the meeting.  It was worth it!
