A Little Found Dog

Well, well, well... I heard that someone in Texas is having a birthday today!  I wonder who it might be?  Hmm... someone with the last name of Beckner and the first name of George?  Well, well, whoever it might be today's story is dedicated to a great fellow who often has a smile on his face and a funny story to share.  May your special day be a great one with lots of cake and maybe some ice cream, too!

HERE'S YOUR STORY ON THIS HAPPY DAY!

When we first arrived in Bahia after our big move from Fortaleza and a furlough, we began to think about getting another dog to keep old Blackie company during our many weekends away with retreats out on the island.  He was always very sad to see us go and didn't eat well while we were away.  So we let a few people know and began to look around.  Dogs are everywhere in our little interior town - strays, that is.  So, we didn't think it would be too hard to find some dog somewhere.

One Wednesday night when we arrived for prayer meeting, low and behold there was a dog in the church yard.  It was a cute little thing and very friendly.  It looked a little like a Jack Russel dog.

It hung around all during the church service and seemed like it really needed a good home.  It was very thirsty and was covered with ticks.  So we took it home.  We fed it and right away gave it a very good bath.  I spent about an hour removing ticks from its ears and all over its little body.  It was very patient and it even seemed to get along well with Blackie.  We started thinking about a name for the dog.

Sometime the next day, a lady showed up at the gate clap-clap-clapping for our attention.  She was the lady that cleaned the church at that time.  She said she wanted her dog back!  She said, Thank you for finding it and bringing it home to keep safe.  I was pretty disappointed. And she was pretty happy - she had gotten a free dog spa treatment and complete de-ticking!  She said that the dog often followed her to church when she went to clean.  That day when she left it was no where to be seen and she wasn't sure where it had gone.

So we found a dog and lost a dog within 24 hours!  It wasn't but about two weeks later that missionary Uncle Doug Reiner brought the Girl dog to our door and she stayed around for ten good years.

Moral of the story:  If you find a cute dog, don't take the ticks off until you are sure it has no owner!
