Books Read Recently

Hold Strong  by Robert Dugoni Wow, this is a historical fiction work about American POW's in the Japanese theater.  It's also a love story about two young people from a small town in the Midwest.  The authors worked hard to document the factual aspects of the book. The Despicable Missionary by Annie Bradley This is a biography of Pakistani Christian who desired to be a voice in the middle of persecution in her country and how to rose above her anger to help others of all religions come to Christ. The Girl Who Escaped From Auschwitz by Ellie Midwood This is a sad novel with a sad ending, but nonetheless worth the read.  It's about a couple who find love in the midst of the death camps of Hitler. The Undercover Secretary by Ellie Midwood This was another historical fiction work based roughly on facts about the dark Holocaust days during World War II. Fragments of Light by Michele Phoenix I had been wanting to read a book by this former missionary and cu...

17306 Days

As of today that's how many days I've been alive here on the face of the earth.  Interesting isn't it?  You can find out how many days you've been alive on site www.therobertd.com of the author of 20,000 Days, Robert D. Smith.  It's an amazing little book that can be read in a few hours.  Mr. Smith, on passing his 50th birthday, felt he needed some time for reevaluation and self-reflection.  His book is the result with practical tips and inspirational messages about how to make better use of the time you've been given. "Redeeming the Time" has always been one of my self-themes of live, so I enjoyed reading about how Mr. Smith decided to make better use of each one of his days.  Even though the author is a spiritual person, his style is not that of preaching or even teaching, just sharing and relating what he himself came to see  as goals for his next 20,000 days. I liked the fact that Mr. Smith is to the point and suggests that each person is ful...

Book Review: The Book of Man

When the mailman on his motorcycle delivered the box  with this book, I had forgotten which book I had ordered from Booksneeze!  Sometimes the mail is just that slow from the USA to the middle of nowhere Brazil.  After opening the box and seeing the size of this book, I thought - Eeeek, how will I ever read the whole thing!  It's big!  But it's not just big - it's full!  It's full of great reading material for any young fellow on his way to becoming a man. I sat down that very afternoon and starting reading The Book of Man right away.  No, I have yet to finish it, but I have read enough to say that I like what I've seen and I plan to buy two more copies to have one for each of my three sons.  I am even considering using this book in our homeschool work this next year for literature. It would seem that William Bennett truly researched and searched for great literature to go along with the themes he felt necessary for a young man to know and c...

Book Review: Great Day

So what's wrong with you?  Dog die? Yup, My dog died ... I was already in an incredible personal slump. My best friend had just left on furlough. Things were not going well at home. Another friend had broken off our friendship. My part-time job was losing its joy Money was getting tight. My boys were growing up way too fast... And then this little book showed up in the mail one day from Booksneeze! It was like a breathe of fresh air at just the right crucial moment.  I had opened the package with the book the morning before the wild night when my twelve year old dog went into total arrest because of canine distemper. As we made the decision to go into the big city to take our old dog to see the vet after a wild night of convulsions and seizures, little phrases from the first pages I had browsed ran through my head.  When the doctor said there was little hope and we considered putting our dear dog to sleep, I just kept repeating to myself that somewhere in all ...

Don't Judge a Book by its Cover?

I chose a book based mostly on its beautiful leather cover and its title.   Be careful, because covers and titles can be deceiving! Book Review:   The Love And Respect Experience What does every woman want in her marriage?  Love, respect, friendship, happiness...  The author of this devotional book based on the Love & Respect conferences and seminars, teaches that men want respect and women want love.  I don't know about you ladies out there, but I want it all - love and repect.  I want to be treated with manners and kindness and consideration.   And I don't want to have to deserve it either, I just want it! Well, with that said, maybe this is just the book I needed?  I did find this book helpful with some excellent suggestions on building your marriage up and in working to find time and ways to share spiritually with your husband.  I particularly liked the section of each devotional that indicates what you...
